Hiis early 2000s steam programmes were my comfort food as a child. Although I was told by my nan "that's the lad who used to go round knocking down chimneys" I never really appreciated that side of him til recently. He was just a brilliant presenter with such intense passion for steam and industrial architecture. A bit of a "le wrong generation" guy who probably wishes he was Victorian, but this negative side never showed through in his presenting. It's not hard to see why he had so many wives throwing themselves at him over the years!
I was going to include a bit about that wrong generation stuff along the lines of him being a sort of British Stakhanovite / conservative stereotype of 'working class graft' or whatever, but tbf it doesn't seem like he ever leant into that sort of thing when he was around.
Yeah, like they say "You go on the internet and find out that they hate Forrest Gump"... hate all the Youtube commenters using racist rhetoric under Dibnah clips. "Fred wouldn't have stood for this, join Pat*****ic Alt****ive" etc.
